Why I'm not going back to work....

With the shop closing, there has been quite a bit of discussion about me going back to work. It is a painful thought for me. I enjoy working, I really do, I love interacting with others, and no matter what job I've held, I'm a hard worker who takes pride in what I do. What is so painful for me, is the thought of putting Norah in daycare, and adding to the responsibility of the older kids.

I've been blessed enough to stay home with the kids for several years. I believe it is worth every financial sacrifice we make as a family, and I will never regret not having certain "things" in return for staying with the kids. Don't get me wrong, I do not judge any parent that does make the choice to work, for whatever reason. We are all individuals, so I have no judgement when it comes to a parent's choice. It is all a challenge, no matter what choice you make.

A few years ago, when I was working, Heather, under little supervision was getting on myspace. I found the phone number of a person from myspace that had been contacting her. She believed he was 15 and lived in Maryland. I believe otherwise, especially after calling the number and hearing the adult voice. It was very scary, and eye-opening. This changed a lot of things in our home. I decided to leave my job, and I have never once regretted it.

We have made sacrifices. I was a Claims Adjuster and made a good living financially, but the peace of mind I have being a constant, active parent, is the title that I gladly wear now.

Now, back to the current situation. Our shop is closing, and we are going to be strapped for the next year due to my husband's career change. He has been pressuring me to go back to work, and I've been resisting. I don't want Heather to have all of the extra household responsibilities that will inevitably happen as a result of me not being here as much, plus, I'll be paying half my paycheck on gas and child care.

I've decided to start babysitting. I have come up with several options, and I am hoping to bring in at least $600 a month. This would tremendously help to pay our bills, and I will still be home with my kids as well. I posted an ad today on craigslist for babysitting, and I am hoping to meet some great parents and kids and this turns out well for us all. Click Here To View My Child Care Flyer

Diabetes & Diet - getting off the insulin and taking the pill!

When Tim was first diagnosed with diabetes, he was hospitalized because his blood sugar was over 800. Normal blood sugar is around 100. Since that time, he has been insulin dependent. When he left the hospital, he was given the pill for Diabetes, Humilin and Lantus, and took 3 shots and 1 pill a day.

With diet, initially we were able to reduce the amount of insulin he was taking to 10 units of each per day, and he did away with the pill. Since, we have been trying to get the class A CDL for over the road truck driving, we realized, he'd have to come off the insulin altogether.

Tim has been working really hard on following the exchange system for several weeks. After his doctor's appointment Monday, we are going to be able to get off the insulin all together. I'm so happy his diabetes should not present a problem to obtaining an over the road job.

I say "we" a lot I've noticed while writing about his diabetes. This is truly a disease that effects the whole family. I can no longer just cook without thinking about a diabetics diet. I can no longer enjoy drinking a coke, without thinking how that effects the picture as a whole. It truly is a challenge.

We are closing the shop!

Well, as many of you know, it has been a rough year for us. We stepped out on blind faith to open the shop, and it has been about 10 months and we have decided to close our doors. This will be our last month at Exhaust Pro & Auto Center.

This was not an easy choice, but after a lot of thought and prayerful consideration, we have decided it is the best decision for our family.

Tim has diabetes as many know, and we pay an arm and a leg for health insurance every month. In the last year we had to drop coverage on the family and just leave it on Tim because we could not afford it otherwise. Every year, the cost of the insurance has rose considerably since he developed diabetes. My husband is not overweight, maybe 15 pounds, but definately not obese. Diabetes runs in his family and he became insulin dependent about 2 years ago. Not only is the insurance outrageous, but his medications are $110 a month, even with insurance.

It has been very stressful and worrisome not having health coverage. Furthermore, with a diagnosis of diabetes it is difficult to obtain any decent amount of life insurance.

Tim had been toying with the idea of driving a truck over the road for some time. He asked me how I felt about it, and I've researched it quite a bit. He does not want to stay over the road permanently, but he will need a good year of good experience to obtain a good regional job after he gains the experience. There are many great large companies, that offer excellent family benefits at an affordable price, so this is the route we've decided to go.

Excellent BOGO deals at Kroger on SkinCare

I was in Kroger on Monday soing my grocery shopping. I am getting better at couponing with every visit. I had my list prepared with my coupons, and I brought my coupon box along in case there were any unadvertised sales I had coupons for. Boy, am I glad I brought my coupons with me! L'Oreal skincare which normally goes for $16.97 was all on sale Buy 1 get 1 Free, not only that I had 2 coupons for $3.00/1, which I used 2. I got about $35 worth of great skincare moisturizers and their eye cream for $11. Also, Clearisil was BOGO, and I used 2 $2/1 coupons, I bought some cleansers for my teenager for about $5, got $14 worth of product!

I saved over $60 on my visit to Kroger, almost 1/2 of my total. I was prepared, and I stocked up on sale items. This was my best grocery visit since I've started couponing. I got a weeks worth of groceries and tons of household items and skincare for $65.00 out of pocket for my family of 5!! Yay me!!

Poor Donelson Warriors - Single C lost again!

Well, we suffered another loss today. Luckily, we didn't suffer as bad as last week, the score was 14-0, LaVergne's favor. Today is the Jamboree so several different leagues will be playing at the Donelson Warriors field. Admission is $5.00, pretty steep, but it covers the officials fees for the year.

My boy's team, the single C's, are all first year players, they are getting better every week, and I'm really proud of them. Good try boys!!! We'll get 'em next time!

Enjoy Wave Country for a few more Weekends until Labor Day

For a few more weekends you can enjoy Wave Country, and the great value! Admission is $10.00 for Adults (I remember when it used to be $5), and $8.00 for kids 13 and under, 2 and under are free. Float rentals are available free while they are available. The new water slides are quite a ride, if you've traveled past them on Briley Parkway, you'll notice the 40 foot and 80 foot slides, they look a bit intimidating. There are also 3 water slides for the more mild ride, and of course, the wave pool.

There are only a few more days to enjoy Wave Country until next summer, it is a good, cheap, alternative to Nashville Shores.

Centennial Park is a beautiful setting, and this is bound to be an enjoyable evening on the cheap here in Nashville.

The Kiddos, football and (bad) pin curls

I just wanted to post some pictures of my sweet kids, especially for their Granny who is turning 56 in a few days.

Ryan's poor heart was defeated as bad as the Warriors were by the Una Bears on Saturday, they lost 33-0. Ryan played well though, he's so tough! He was tackled in the 2nd half and went down for about 30 seconds. Tim thought I was over-reacting when I wanted to run over to my baby boy, and he made me stay put. Ryan was okay, but he did get an ugly bruise. I hope I'm cut out to be a football player's mom.

Football has really taken over our lives, he practices 3 nights a week. It was from 5:30 to about 8:20 every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, but they have cut it back to 7:30p.m. since school started. It is a very busy schedule for us, especially with games every Saturday, not to mention homework.

Last night, I did not go to church, (I know Mom, bad me.) I had a really busy day with the shop and didn't get home until late, and I had dinner in the crock pot. Really I just wanted to stay home with the kids. We had fun though. Ryan and I read together for a while, then I decided to put Norah's hair up in pin curls (or attempt it any way.) I used to love when Granny Britt would put my hair in pin curls. My hair, and Norah's too, is straight as a stick, and has no life at all to it.

I guess what made me think of doing it, is a show I've been watching on Bravo, called Shear Genius. I saw a few weeks ago someone pin curl a client's hair and it reminded me of it. Well, I'm no Shear Genius, I can tell ya. I really didn't know what I was doing. I'd never done pin curls before. Come to find out, I twisted the curls, and it just looks a mess, but here's a picture. She's still so cute anyway. I found a website today that gives you the correct instructions on pin curls if you're interested in trying them. I'll have to try the curls again, with some direction next time.

Learn the right way to do pin curls here.

Nashville is such a beautiful city, and with so much to do.

I was helping my husband today at work, which involved a lot of driving around. I served as a shuttle service to customers who did not want to wait around, and parts tracker, since UPS keeps getting our zip code wrong and we have to chase down our packages. At first, I was a little ill because, it has been a really crazy week with school starting and all. I had my day planned to catch up my last 2 loads of laundry and cleaning. My most important chore of the day however, was to take a long, much needed nap.

When business is there, and it was today, you have to forego the naps. You may have to drag your 2 year old everywhere you go, without her having a nap either. Trust me, this is much worse than me not having a nap!!! Regardless, I really got to travel this city today, and sometimes I forget how beautiful it is, and how much there is to do here. While driving a customer to the Airport area, I was telling him what you can do cheaply here in Nashville (especially since, poor fellow, didn't intend on his motor locking up on him as he was traveling from South Dakota to South Carolina). One thing I realized by the time the day was over, is you really don't have to do anything to enjoy this town.

There are beautiful hills spread out to enjoy God's handiwork, and great old buildings and ugly ones too, to enjoy or wonder about while on your way. I especially enjoyed traveling up North First Avenue in downtown alongside the Cumberland River, the old mixed with the new. I noticed the Music City Star picking up passangers ready to head home, and I wondered what a beautiful ride that might be as well for a reasonable price. I'll have to take that ride on a less busy day.

Rite Aid Coupon Sale! August 10th thru 23rd

If you picked up your Sunday paper you hopefully hung onto the Rite Aid flyer, there are over 109 coupon offers, the flyer does not advertise any prices, so I don't know their prices this week. Each of the coupons do say Rite Aid, but there is a little blurb about them being redeemed by the manufacturer, so I don't know yet if they will let you stack them.

What is coupon stacking?

Coupon stacking is when you have a store coupon and then use a manufacturer coupon on top of it, this is usually allowed. I do it all the time, especially at Walgreen's because they often have their own in store coupons.

Some of my favorite coupons included in the flyer are:
$5.00 off Yuban Coffee 36 oz. or Maxwell House Coffee 34.5-39 oz.
$3.00 off any 2 Nabisco Cookies or Crackers 8.1 - 18 oz.
$30.00 gift card for a prescription transfer (some exemptions apply as far as Medicaid paid prescriptions)
$2.00 off One Touch Lancets 100 ct. (for diabetic hubby)
$1.00 off Secret Platinum Antiperspirant 2.7 oz.
$2.00 off any 2 Dr. Pepper Brand 12 packs
$5.00 off any Memorex Blank Media $9.99 or Above
B1G1 Free Trident Xtra Care Gum
B1 Pampers Sensitive Baby Wipes Get Rite Aid Sensitive Baby Wipes Free (there are actually several of these buy one name brand get one Rite Aid brand free; Visine, Crest Pro-Health Rinse, Cambell's Chunky Chicken Noodle Soup or New England Clam Chowder, Campbell's Cream of Chicken or Mushroom Soup, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, Ziploc Freezer Bags, Orville Redenbachers's Microwave Popcorn, Lotrimin Cream, Benedryl Cream, Tylenol PM, Advil Cold & Sinus, Zantac 75, EPT Stick Test, Robitussin DM). None of these coupons are redeemed by the manufacturer, so I know you could stack the coupons on these.

K-Mart Clearance Sales

I was in K-Mart today on Donelson Pike, and they have a ton of deals. When you walk in there are a couple of clearance carts full of school supplies and hair care products like L'Oreal Vive line and Pantene (you may still have some coupons for these products, making the final cost around $0.50) Also the clothing that is on clearance is an additional 40% off. I bought my son a couple of long sleeve white button down oxfords for his fall school uniforms in Nashville Metro schools. They ended up being $3.00 a piece. That is better prices than some thrift stores charge for used goods.

There are several cute backpacks on sale for $6, from the Athletetech brand, they are regularly $12.99. There is 25% off the other backpacks, excluding those sold in sporting goods. I didn't see any really great deals on school supplies. Most stores offered these in the past 2-3 weeks, and for the late shoppers, looks like we're stuck paying full price. Luckily, I had bought a lot of things at Walgreen's for $0.09 and stocked up on some staples, but I certainly didn't get all I needed. One day, one day, I am going to organized and prepared!!!

Buy One Get One Free Deals at K-Mart from 8/10 thru Saturday, 8/16
L'Oreal face and eye cosmetics (includes the HIP line and Bare Naturals)
Wet n Wild cosmetics
CoverGirl Aquacurrent, mascara or TruBlend (Clean liquid makeup or pressed powder, sale 2/$6)
Vitasmart vitamins, or herbal supplements

McDonald's coupon in paper for a free breakfast sandwich or regular menu sandwich with a McCafe' purchase.

McDonald's has really been sending out the coupons lately for the McCafe', it is their new coffee drink, they have Iced Mocha, Mocha, Cappacino, and Vanilla Latte. I tried the Vanilla Latte with a free coupon I had, and it was delicious. Also, it is a much better price than going to Starbucks! Make sure you don't throw this valuable coupon away and try the McCafe and a sandwich for free one day this month.

Best place to buy The Tennessean at a bargain price

I often buy several of The Tennessean just for the coupons alone on Sunday's. I usually just go to the nearest gas station and pay $1.75. My sweet husband went and bought me a paper today before I woke up. He went to our closest Walgreen's, these are dotted throughout the whole city.

He paid $0.99 at Walgreen's for the paper, this was in Hermitage at Central Pike and Old Hickory Blvd. Let me know if your local Walgreen's all have the same deal.

Buy 1 paper, and look over the coupons, if there are some great ones that week, buy a few, it will pay for itself in the end.

Last day for some deals at CVS, before tomorrow

Some great deals I got at CVS this week will be ending tonight. So get there before the new sale starts tomorrow.

Children's or Infant Advil ends up free after Extra Reward Bucks, you pay $5.79, and get $5.79 in ERB for use on your next purchase.

Dawn dish liquid, using P&G coupon from 8/3 insert, ends up being $0.24 after sale price and coupon.

Extreme Energy, orange or berry 2 pack, sale $4.99, Extra Reward Bucks $4.99, ends up free.

Gillette Fusion razor (comes with 1 cartridge), on sale $9.99, use $4.00 coupon from Sunday insert, and receive $3.00 Extra Reward Bucks - Final price $2.99.

Pert Plus 1 in 1 shampoo, Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale, use $2.00 coupon from 8/3 insert = FREE SHAMPOO. (use 2 coupons if you have them, and if your CVS will allow you to use them, I don't suggest CVS on Lebanon & McGavock, they are notorious for not allowing 2 coupons, I could write a whole rant on this, since the manufacturer's coupons have nothing to do with CVS sales)

Revlon B1B1Free sale on lip products, mascara, eye shadow or liner, use $1.00 coupon from 8/3 insert, you can save over 60% if they allow you to use 2 coupons.

Sure deodorant B1G1F, use $1.00 coupons from 8/3 insert, and you'll save over 80%.

These were my favorite purchases from CVS this week, share yours with me and any clever ways you have to share any money at CVS.

My Favorite Thrift Stores in and around Nashville

I love thrift store shopping. As a mother of 3 on one income, it can be a challenge to find nice stylish clothes for my family. I do know what the name brands are, and I do like to wear some of them. I do not like to pay full price, and I don't, EVER!

This list does not just include Nashville, because 3 of my very favorite thrift stores are in Williamson County. As much as I hate how expensive Goodwill is anymore these days, the Goodwill in Franklin, TN and Spring Hill, TN are worth the drive and the prices. Especially if you catch one of their 50% off Saturdays. I usually don't like the weekly specials because most of the items have already been picked over. Also, I usually don't find the best kids clothes, but I lose patience going through the disorganized kids clothing, they are not sized.

At Goodwill, my favorite buys are women's clothing, suits, men's clothing, and SHOES, SHOES, SHOES. I've found Salvatore Ferragamo, Cole Haan, Crocs, Stuart Weitzman, lots of real goodies. I never pay over $8.00 for shoes at a thrift store, but when I walk away with a $400 pair of shoes, "Heck Yeah!"

My all time favorite thrift store in Franklin is Graceworks. Not only is it nice, clean, and well organized, the profits from the store go to families in need in the Williamson County area. The first Saturday of the month Graceworks has a warehouse furniture sale, these have some great used furniture finds, and I've seen some Saturday's when they have so much stuff, they will run the furniture 1/2 off the already great prices. Another non-profit that benefits the community is Our Thrift Store. I've found a lot of great items there, clothing, shoes, kids clothes, housewares, furniture and jewelry. They also have some nice furniture at times.

In Nashville, Southern Thrift is by far my favorite thrift store, they are for profit, but they are huge stores, decently organized for a thrift, and they have a ton of housewares, shoes, books, jewelry, handbags and kids clothing. Actually I have found the best clothes for my kids here, I'm talking darling Ralph Lauren Polo dresses for my 2 y/o for $1.99.

If you have favorite thrift stores in and around Nashville, I welcome your comments here to let others know how to save money in Nashville. Let me know your likes, dislikes, great finds, whatever. I'd love to hear from ya!

Buy The Tennessean today 8/3 for the coupons, great deals today!

If you haven't already, make sure you get today's paper. There are 3 coupon inserts, SmartSource, RedPlum, and Proctor & Gamble, all full of great coupons.

I'm writing this late, I'll put some of my savings on here tomorrow.

A quick note for anyone looking for high school uniforms for Nashville Metro Schools, K-Mart has their textured polos on sale for $6.00 today and tomorrow, they are regularly $10.99, also if you buy 100 oz Tide (on sale $10.00, coupon in P&G insert) or Downy Total Care (on sale for 2/$11.00) you will get a $5.00 coupon for Route 66 purchases. You could get the shirt for $1.00. Great Deal!

Walgreens has some really great deals on school supplies, I'll post my transaction from Walgreen's later tonight or tomorrow. They have fliers with coupons in the store, if you didn't get a paper.

I didn't make it to CVS today, but I can't wait to go tomorrow. I'm new at all this coupon business, so I'm going to be more prepared tomorrow with a list. I spent 2 hours in Walgreen's tonight, which is a little ridiculous. I'm most excited about the sale on Pampers for $8.88 with card on the Jumbo Packs, plus there was coupon in the P&G insert for $1.50 off.

Publix has some great Buy 1 Get 1 Free Sales going on through Tuesday. In one of the coupon inserts there is a refund offer on Kellogg's products for $10.00 when you purchase 10 items, most of the items are on the B1G1F sale, plus there are coupons also saving $1.00 off a purchase of 2. Lots of great snack foods, and things to save to pack lunches.

Rack Room Shoes is having a Buy 1 Get 50% off sale, plus there is a coupon for $10.00 on any purchase over $60.00. I also have another one of these coupons from last weeks paper.

I look forward to posting my transactions later. I have been extremely busy today, and wasting a lot of time being unprepared while shopping.

My First CVS Transaction - a learning experience!

Well after reading several blogs, I thought I knew all there was to know about being a savvy CVS shopper. I thought I was going to walk away spending about $5 and have a bag full of freebies. Boy, was my first trip a learning experience. What I figured out was... be prepared. The easiest way to be prepared, is to review your flyer first, make a list second (add up the total of your purchases and subtract coupons and sales to determine subtotal), match up coupons to list, and do several transactions. My friendly little tip for the day; if there is a line, let people go ahead of you between transactions.

Transaction #1 on 7/21/2008
2/$11.00 Kotex Tampons - 36 count - saved $2.78 with card, used 1 coupon .75 (I had 2 coupons, but couldn't find them, this is where preparation is handy.)

3/$6.47 Glade Scented Oil Refills - saved $3.90 with card - I had a coupon buy 2 get 1 free, but the cashier did not take this off my total. (I didn't realize it b/c I didn't have a list and I was not prepared, so I lost $2.49 in this transaction.)

2/$6.49 All Detergents - on sale - Buy 1 Get 1 Free - I used TWO coupons for the detergents saving $1.50 off the sale price of $6.49 for both. (Finally, I did something right.)

2/$1.49 Trident Extra Care Mint Gum - B1G1F - plus B1G1F coupon - (I actually got something for free.)

I was shocked when my cashier demanded I pay him $25.16, what happened to free stuff??? So after borrowing $6 from my oldest daughter, (I only had $20), I paid him, and looked at my receipt.

It was too late according to the cashier to give me the $2.49 coupon he didn't ring in, and I was so flustered and nervous from the line now forming, I left and forgot my coupon.

Here's the good news - I saved $14.66 with the CVS card sales and $3.74 with coupons for a total of $18.40. Now I have tampons to last me a few months, my laundry detergent needs are met by my favorite detergent, candles are lit and smelling good in my entry way, and I GOT FREE GUM, not to mention the confidence to do this again with my $5 in Extra Reward Bucks for my next trip.

Yardsaling for eBay! (Today's Finds)

Well, I haven't been selling quite as much on eBay since we moved from our home to the small apartment. This past week was the first time I listed anything for several months. I had a Gucci tote and some golf clubs that were just taking up space and I was completely broke, so I finally got off my lazy butt and listed the items. I have 1 auction left, but it looks like my sales will be over $300.00, so I'm really pleased since I didn't really have more than a $20 personal investment in the items.

Today while taking the kids to register them for school, I passed several yard sale signs, and I was getting that itch. I only had $25.00 and I really didn't need to spend it, but hey, it's an investment right? I was over by McGavock High School, and I've always loved that area of town, the older homes on the nice large lots. I only stopped at one, and I found several great things to sell on eBay. Mostly it was Chico's clothing items, which have always been big sellers for me in the past. They had several more Chico's items I didn't purchase that were too dated, but the Travelers always do well, and the striped was very nice and classic. I also found a really cool brooch. The clothes were a $1 a piece, and the brooch was $10 bucks, but I asked if they would take less, so I got it for $5. Here's a picture of my finds, I spent $14, I got 1 shirt for me 2 outfits for Norah, 2 Chico's outfits and a Chico's shirt and the pretty brooch to sell on eBay. After I get them posted I'll post a link so you can watch the auctions progress.

New to CVS - Me too!

Okay, so you are probably like me if you aren't real familiar with CVS and the Extra Rewards system. I heard a lot about it on other blogs, but I didn't know what much of it meant.

Here are the easy things you need to know if you want to earn free products at CVS. Get a paper every Sunday, and start clipping your coupons people, and make a list for CVS based on what you need and what you can get free with the Extra Reward Bucks. If you are like me and don't want to spend a lot of money out of pocket, you will need to make multiple transactions. Each transaction can produce Extra Reward Bucks (ECB's), and you can use these to make your next transaction.

Now, I live in Hermitage, there are 3 CVS's in my close proximity. One sadly is closing. The CVS in Kroger's shopping center on Old Hickory Blvd. closes on August 2, 2008. I'm sad about this, but they did not do enough business. It is actually hard to see unless you just know it is there. I will miss them because they have the nicest employees, but I think most of them will be transferring. The only reason I'm telling you about this CVS, is because several items are 75% off until closing, which, by the way is tomorrow.

The CVS on Lebanon Pike at the McGavock intersection is by far the worst as far as customer service, but you can still redeem the Extra Reward Bucks. They are VERY picky about what coupons they will accept if there is a sale on those items. I have called corporate about this, and was told by a District Manager they will be trained to take manufacturer's coupons on sale items, but I am unable to report on this yet. I hope things improve.

What do I do to get started???
It is easy to get started at CVS, just stop in the store and sign up for the card and you will receive it then. This is the quickest way to begin saving. If you already have a card or would like to sign up for one,you can do that here. You will earn 2% cashback on your purchases each quarter in addition to the weekly and monthly sales that offer Extra Reward Bucks.

Keep viewing my posts and I will give you updates on my transactions and savings.

Saving Nashville Money!

Welcome to my first post. Let me tell you a little about my blog and what you can expect.

I am a small business owner with my husband. We own Exhaust Pro in Nashville, TN. We specialize in Custom Exhaust Work, Mufflers, Converters and General Auto Repair. I help with the business, but my real job is wife and mother of 3 wonderful children.

In these trying economic times, everyone is trying to pinch a penny here and there, and I want to help you do that do. I spend hours researching deals on the internet, the local paper and while I am out and about. I plan on posting those deals here to save you money.

I will let you know about great coupon offers and sales and provide you with links to deals on the internet.

My goal through this blog is to pass on to other readers the savings I have found. I will share my purchases with you and tell what is going on in my life. I hope you will enjoy reading, and the savings. I encourage you to comment and post any savings you find and would like to share.

As for now, I am off to register my two oldest kids for school. We recently moved back to Nashville from Spring Hill, Tennessee, so we have to get these kids ready for school. Check back soon because I will be posting the great deals I got at CVS this week, I saved over $90!!!
